A Talk With Polar Explorer Ben Saunders
Yesterday, DCPS had the incredible privilege of welcoming world-renowned polar explorer Ben Saunders, who shared his inspiring story of resilience, teamwork and determination with pupils and staff.
Ben captivated the whole school with stories from his 12 major expeditions across the Arctic and Antarctica, where he has travelled more than 4,500 miles on foot and spent around 2% of his entire life at the Earth’s highest and most extreme latitudes. One of the most remarkable achievements he spoke about was his 108-day Scott Expedition, a 2,898km journey across Antarctica, which earned him the world record for the longest polar journey on foot.
During the talk, Ben explained that his success was not just about physical toughness, but about mindset, kindness and teamwork. He spoke powerfully about his time travelling with his expedition partner, Tarka, and how it was their patience, encouragement and kindness towards each other that ultimately helped them survive 108 days in one of the harshest environments on Earth.
A key message that really resonated with the children was Ben’s advice to:
“Not think of success as a finish line in the future, but as something you build every day by continuing to challenge yourself.”
He also reminded pupils that no one else is the authority on their potential – with self-belief and resilience, almost anything is possible.
The talk ended with a lively question-and-answer session. The children asked thoughtful and imaginative questions such as:
- What was the most dangerous experience you’ve ever had?
- Which expedition was your favourite?
- What food did you eat in Antarctica?
- Are you planning another adventure like this in the future?
Ben answered each question with honesty and humour, leaving pupils inspired, motivated and full of curiosity about the world.
We are incredibly grateful to Ben Saunders for visiting DCPS and sharing such a powerful message that ambition, kindness and perseverance can take you anywhere.
